BLP Technologies announces availability of new X-Pulse System Controller for Internet applications

FARMINGDALE, N.J., Oct. 22, 2004 — BLP Technologies, a supplier of power control solutions for the utilities industry, today announced the availability of new X-Pulse System Controller (XPSC) Software. XPSC enables utilities to remotely access and control X-Pulse’s disconnect and reconnect capabilities from any Internet-enabled computer workstation.

X-Pulse was introduced by BLP to provide utilities with the ability to remotely disconnect or reconnect residential electric power from off-site locations or corporate offices. The cost-effective application, which incorporates BLP’s field-proven PowerPulse switch technology, benefits users by eliminating costly and potentially hazardous site visits to hostile environments by meter personnel.

Previously, the X-Pulse control software was only available for use by at a single computer workstation. The new XPSC network application allows multiple users based at various utility locations to access the X-Pulse system and related real-time data such as the switch status and location of all field units.

In addition, software disconnect and reconnect capabilities can be tailored to meet the responsibilities of individuals working at utility locations ranging from customer service centers to meter shops. For instance, a customer service representative at a specific locale may be restricted to X-Pulse reconnect capabilities and not allowed to perform disconnects. To accommodate future individual station needs, the application also permits designated utility system administrators to modify and monitor these capabilities on an ongoing and case-by-case basis.


To ensure safety and network integrity, the software system is hosted at a state-of-the-art and remote high-security data center employing Secure Sockets Layers certificates, which are normally used by online banks, to protect all X-Pulse data transmitted over the Internet. Fully redundant network architecture and automatic failover systems also virtually eliminate service loss or performance reductions due to system downtimes. The entire system is further supported by the services of a 24/7 helpdesk that is staffed by professionals dedicated to the needs of the utilities industry.

X-Pulse network operation is also simple. XPSC generates the appropriate encoded message and sends it to the paging network. The message is then transmitted over the commercial paging network to the X-Pulse field device for decoding and action. This option eliminates the need to build or maintain an expensive communications system and further enables the rapid and cost-effective deployment of the system for use in small and large-scale installations.
