Electric vehicle (EV) batteries don’t have to be thrown out after being retired from vehicle-based service. One Canada-based company has centered its business model around this, giving EV batteries a second life as storage systems before their final retirement.
Moment Energy creates battery energy storage systems (BESS) by repurposing retired EV batteries. It works with major automotive companies, including Mercedes Benz Energy, to support circular economy goals and ensure their batteries are used in second-life applications before they are recycled. The company aims to help utilities, microgrids, and commercial customers improve grid reliability, power EV charging stations, and reduce demand charges.
A participating company in the DISTRIBUTECH International Initiate program, Moment Energy will soon showcase its offerings at DISTRIBUTECH International, set for February 26-29, 2024 in Orlando, Florida.
Earlier this month, Moment Energy announced its first ever end-to-end integration involving Hydro Ottawa Limited, an electricity distribution company, and BluWave-ai, a Canadian provider of artificial intelligence (AI) enabled grid energy optimization platform to bring distributed energy resource management system (DERMS) capability to the distribution grid.
Earlier this year, Moment Energy said it became the first North American company to be certified by UL Solutions to UL 1974, the Standard for Evaluation for Repurposing Batteries. Over the summer, the comapny announced a partnership with Saskatchewan Renewable Energy Solutions (SRES), through which SRES will identify projects that can benefit from Moment Energy’s BESS.
Mercedes-Benz Energy and Moment Energy established a supply agreement for repurposing EV batteries in 2022.
At DISTRIBUTECH, Moment Energy says it’s looking forward to showing off its energy storage solutions; taking advantage of networking opportunities with industry experts, potential investors, and innovators; and gaining insights from leading experts in the energy sector.
