Barcelona, Spain — Spanish renewable energy firm Ecoenergies hopes to install as much as 37 MW of biomass capacity in the next three years, a company spokeswoman revealed last week.
The news came on the eve of the inauguration of the firm’s first such facility in Barcelona, which will have 2MW of capacity and will use 28,000 tons of residues from Barcelona parks and gardens as its feedstock for its pellets.
“We have 10MW, 20MW and 15MW projects that we hope to begin building this year,” she said, without detailing in which Spanish cities they will be located.
The move comes as Spain’s biomass market is expected to grow sharply in coming years as the government removes red tape and provides incentives for the technology to develop.
“Spain has a lot of forestry and agricultural residues that can be used for biomass, much more than in other parts of Europe,” said Miguel Angel Ambreu, Ecoenergies’ general manager.
He added other companies are planning large biomass installations in coming months.
