Lawrence Jones, Electric Light & Power Executive Conference advisory board member and Alstom’s vice president for utility innovations and infrastructure resilience, has been reappointed by the U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to serve another three-year term on its Smart Grid Advisory Committee (SGAC).
The committee, which is responsible for advising NIST on the state of the smart grid industry, was founded in 2007 under section 1305 of the Energy Independence Security Act and consists of 13 members who represent leaders from the nation’s largest utilities, technology companies and industry associations.
Since his first appointment to SGAC in 2010, Jones has been an active member of the committee sharing his knowledge of the industry to help NIST understand the state of smart grid development and advise on related research and standards activities. The information provided by the committee also is used to help direct Smart Grid Interoperability Panel activities.
“As smart grid implementation spreads to utilities across the country, it is important to establish a solid framework of practices and standards to help secure our energy future,” said Michael Atkinson, president of Alstom Grid North America. “We are proud that Dr. Jones has this opportunity to continue drawing on his decades of grid technology expertise to help his peers on the SGAC shape that framework.”

Through his reappointment, Jones will continue offering NIST his perspective and counsel on industry standards, technological advances, priorities, challenges and progress in the area of smart grid and energy infrastructure.
