With more than 127,000 MW of pumped-storage hydro capacity already operating around the globe, significant growth in the market is projected for the near future.
Within the next four years, projects being developed worldwide are expected to bring the total pumped-storage capacity to more than 200,000 MW. (Hydro Review Worldwide 12/2009). Worldwide, pumped-storage projects under construction are expected to increase total capacity by as much as 60 percent by 2014, according to some estimates.
As pumped-storage hydro takes a larger role in the industry, many companies are stepping up to fill increasing demands in the pumped-storage market.
In a recent interview with HydroWorld, Pedro Garciandia, international sales area manager for Indar Electric, said his company is among those making advances in pumped-storage technology.
Garciandia said Indar is one of the largest hydro generator manufacturers, producing generators for several varieties of turbines.
“We are one of the pioneer companies now for pumped storage,” Garciandia said, noting that Indar has developed a special electrical application for pumped-storage projects. “We are cooperating with some research centers, and the prototype is already on the market.”
