Peru’s Ministerio de Energia y Minas has extended the construction schedule for the San Gaban 1 hydroelectric project and allowed a capacity increase to 150 MW from 120 MW.
Developer Empresa de Generacion Macusani requested the extension for project start and completion, citing technical and economic reasons including the proposed capacity increase.
Macusani had been scheduled to begin construction in 2006 with completion in 2009 on the San Gaban River in Puno Department.
Under the new completion schedule, work on Gaban 1 is to begin in July 2009 with commercial operation scheduled for June 30, 2011.
In April, the ministry granted a concession to Swiss Hydro to perform a feasibility study of the 204-MW San Gaban 4 hydroelectric project, also on the San Gaban River in Puno. (HNN 4/29/08)
