The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has certified incremental hydropower generation planned for the 7.46-MW Oswego Falls project in New York for a renewable energy production tax credit.
Brookfield Power and Erie Hydropower L.P., licensees for Oswego Falls (No. 5984), requested certification Aug. 8. for efficiency improvements linked to a replacement unit that will go on line before Jan. 1, 2008.
Based on information provided by the licensees, FERC issued an order Oct. 10, certifying an incremental generation gain of 3,875 MWh. The improvements are expected to increase generation by 11.47 percent. The historical generation baseline is 33,780 MWh; generation with improvements will total 37,655 MWh.
The Energy Policy Act of 2005 amended the Internal Revenue Code to apply a 0.9 cent per kilowatt-hour tax credit to incremental production gains from efficiency improvements or from capacity additions to existing hydro facilities placed into service before January 2008.
FERC previously certified Brookfield’s 29.08-MW Piney project in Pennsylvania. (HNN 6/7/06) It most recently certified incremental generation at Duke Power’s 820-MW Keowee-Toxaway project. (HNN 9/22/06)
