Nigeria’s Adamawa State seeks bids from U.S. firms to perform a feasibility study of the 35-MW Kiri hydroelectric project at the existing Kiri Dam on Nigeria’s Gongola River. Bids are due January 8, 2009.
U.S. Ambassador Robin Renee Sanders and Adamawa Gov. Murtala Nyako signed a grant agreement October 17, providing US$467,000 from the U.S. Trade and Development Agency (TDA) to finance the technical assistance to the state.
Adamawa seeks a feasibility study to examine the potential for adding the 35-MW hydro plant to Kiri Dam to provide a reliable source of electricity to the remote state in northeastern Nigeria. The U.S. Embassy said the Kiri Dam feasibility study, the first of its kind in Nigeria, is designed to be an example of how a feasibility study should be structured for successful independent power projects and public-private partnerships in Nigeria.
The project is to include the hydro plant, a transmission line to the national grid, and a separate transmission line to Yola, the state capital.
The feasibility study is to focus on technical, financial, and economic analysis of the project; review of related regulatory issues; estimation of project costs; and an implementation plan.
Only U.S. firms and individuals may bid for the work. However, the contractor may use Nigerian subcontractors for up to 20 percent of the TDA grant amount.
