NHPC has signed a memorandum of agreement with the Government of Arunachal Pradesh to develop two hydroelectric projects in the Indian state with aggregate capacity of 3.8 GW.

The MOAs envisage the development of the Subansiri Upper Hydroelectric Project in Upper Subansiri district and Kamala Hydroelectric Project in Kamle district. Implementation of these two projects will bring huge capital investment of INR430 billion (US$5.2 billion) in the state and annually generate about 12,746 MU of electricity.

The construction and operation of the hydropower projects will create significant employment opportunities in the region and boost the local economy, as well as foster skill development and technical expertise in the region, NHPC said. The implementation of the hydropower projects represents a beacon of hope for a greener and more sustainable future of the state and can significantly reduce its carbon footprint, the company said.

NHPC Limited, a Schedule ‘A’ Enterprise of the Government of India with ‘MINI RATNA’ status, has operational capacity of 7097.20 MW, comprising 6971.20 MW from 22 hydro power stations, 76 MW from two solar power projects and 50 MW from a wind power project. NHPC contributes about 15% of the country’s total installed hydro capacity.
