ESRI Press is republishing “GIS for Everyone” in a second edition that includes additional chapters and a companion CD-ROM. The GIS primer shows readers how to create and use digital maps on their personal computers. With instructional exercises, the ArcExplorer geographic data viewer, and more than 500 MB of geographic data on the CD-ROM, “GIS for Everyone” allows readers to download data for their neighborhoods and build smart maps showing information about their physical environment.

UPS System

S&C’s PureWave UPS System is now available in ratings from 313 to 1,250 kVA, 380 to 600 volts. The system provides back-up power for 30 seconds at 100 percent load, and up to 60 seconds at partial loads-eliminating 99 percent of all power-quality problems. The PureWave UPS System utilizes a reliable off-line design in which the batteries are electrically connected only during outages. The PureWave UPS System can be applied with a backup generator, set to automatically start while the system is serving the load.

Ekstrom Industries’ new Telesurge Adapter is a low-profile extender adapter with a telephone line surge-protection board mounted for easy access between base and safety shield. The adapter protects meters from phone line surges. External phone lines connect to terminals on the safety shield face. An RJ-12 jack is provided for connection of metering communication line.

Tap Position Monitor

Intelligent Control’s Model 1250 tap position monitor provides accurate tap position measurement for transformers and voltage regulators at utility substations. New improvements to the 1250 include advanced communication options, remote monitoring and logging, serial command programming and nonlinear conversion capability. With the Model 1250 every change in tap position or pass-through-neutral can be monitored in real-time, displayed on its LED panel or through supervisory control, logged and totaled to better schedule maintenance orders and ensure reliable power delivery. A standard RS-232 communication port is provided, and an optional RS-485 multidrop network communication capability is available. The 1250 can be set for stepped analog or digital output and used with SCADA, PLCs or other remote monitoring systems.

Power Quality Software

Power Monitors have developed Palm PQ, a software solution that graphically displays real-time power quality recorder data on PalmOS PDAs. Palm PQ lets users view real-time waveforms and harmonics on a PalmOS PDA connected to one of Power Monitors’ portable digital recorders. Data also can be transferred from a PDA to a PC. Real-time waveform and harmonic display functions include: voltage and current waveforms, real power waveforms, vector diagrams, harmonics, harmonic power direction, and three-phase waveforms.

Handheld Computers

DAP Technologies announces that its MICROFLEX Windows CE units now support the Sierra Wireless AirCard 300 for Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD) networks. The combination of the MICROFLEX CE handhelds and the CDPD wireless access creates new opportunities for the development of mission-critical mobile applications.

Data Management

TenFold’s MeterNow! is a usage data management application for energy companies. MeterNow! automates the gathering of customer, usage and meter data. MeterNow!’s Web interface lets energy companies assemble electrical usage and interchange meter data from multiple sources into settlement-ready data.

Network Design

Autodesk Utility Design is a rules-based application that helps electric utilities design distribution networks. The application provides utility-specific design functionality to Autodesk Powerline, Autodesk’s enterprise GIS solution for electric utilities. The application lets users create network sketches, calculate labor and material costs and order necessary equipment.
