Power Line Communications
Semitech Semiconductor announced the availability of the SM2101, an FSK/BPSK-based power line transceiver. The SM2101 is designed with an emphasis on advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) and automated meter reading (AMR) applications where low-cost and high-performance features are required. In addition, the SM2101 can meet the cost demands of high-volume smart grid products such as residential meter communication with the added benefit of operating reliably in notoriously noise-prone, smart grid environments. The SM2101 uses the ultra reliable and versatile power line transceiver components of the proven SM6401 while eliminating the embedded Flash and application microcontroller to provide a more cost-effective solution for high-volume PLC applications on low- or medium-voltage power line networks.

Communications for Monitoring
Dranetz announces two new significant communications options for its Encore Series power quality, demand and energy monitoring system. The first is the company’s IEC 61850 communications option that will be bundled, when specified, into Dranetz 61000 Series instruments. Thus equipped, interoperability will be achieved between Dranetz and third-party devices in utility substation environments operating under the IEC 61850 automation, communications and integration protocol. Available in Q2/11, the IEC 61850 option will enhance the flexibility and facilitate deployment of the Dranetz Encore Series in the utility substation automation environment.
Available now, the second offering is the EssOpc Module, a new object linking and embedding for process control (OPC) gateway for Dranetz Encore Series Software. OPC establishes a common interface for third-party devices allowing access by other systems including building management, supervisory control and data acquisition and other software.
