Zero Voltage Closing Control

The digital Zero Voltage Closing (ZVC) control from Joslyn Hi-Voltage can be used with the Joslyn Varmaster VBM switching package for 15-kV to 69-kV applications. The result is a reduction of system overvoltages and stress on capacitors caused by high inrush currents. The ZVC mitigates transients associated with bringing capacitor banks online and eliminates equipment damage resulting from voltage spikes. Closing is synchronized with zero voltage in each phase, and the three poles are closed independently. The ZVC can interface with any manufacturer’s capacitor controller and can be retrofitted with existing switches.

Self-healing Ethernet Switch

The TC3720 Self-healing Ring Ethernet Fiber Optic Switch from TC Communications provides fully redundant communications for ring topology networks and recovery times of less than 250 milliseconds. If a fiber or device failure occurs, the data path automatically “self heals” to the secondary path. The TC3720 is frequently used in SCADA networks that require multiple channels and the reliability of a self-healing ring topology. It is typically used to interconnect RTUs or PLCs in remote substations to a central site.

Portable PQ Analyzer

The PA-9Plus Portable Power Quality Analyzer from Megger trends important flicker measurements (PST/PLT), while continuing to record events, RMS voltage/current trending, power, energy, waveforms and harmonics. It records power quality and power flow information simultaneously. Recorded information can be viewed via the built-in display or downloaded to a computer. The backlit LCD confirms setup information and real-time status, phasors, frequency, harmonics, harmonic power, voltage, current, per phase and total power/energy data, and minimums/maximums by phase. Charts of trended voltages, currents, waveform graphs and reports of historical out-of-limits information by event type are also viewable.

OMICRON now offers PTS 103, a protocol test system for the IEC 60870-5-103 protection protocol. Typical applications are protection testing while simultaneously recording the protocol, troubleshooting IEC 60870-5-103 connections and uploading of fault recordings from protection relays. The PTS 103 performs either monitoring or simulation of master (primary) and slave (secondary) stations. Configurable filters support focused recording and monitoring. All message codes (public and private) can be interpreted in plain text. The text interpretations can be loaded from files and edited without special tools or skills.

S&C Electric’s PMX modular metal-enclosed switchgear combines the flexibility of S&C System II modular metal-enclosed switchgear with the cost-effectiveness of low-profile S&C pad-mounted switchgear. The PMX switchgear is available at 15 and 25 kV. It is available with 600-amp continuous-current bus and up to a 25-kA short-circuit interrupting capability. PMX switchgear features live-front construction with directly accessible fuses and terminal connections in front or back. Any number of PMX modules can be joined together by means of bus through-bushings.

Event Messenger

The SEL-3010 Event Messenger automatically telephones on-call personnel, delivering text alarm messages via voice, to convey event data and remedial actions. Unlike standard auto-dialers that send pre-recorded alarm messages, the SEL-3010 uses text-to-speech technology to convey “intelligent” telephone voice messages to support personnel. It can replace, enhance or back-up SCADA systems, and can be applied with SEL communications processors, PLCs or other devices.

C&I Data Collection

Datamatic’s new CommSTAR MDx is a new commercial and industrial data retrieval system that supports all major brands of C&I utility meters. The scaleable and flexible system is part of an advanced AMR system that will support not only multi-meter protocols, but also existing and emerging communications technologies. CommSTAR MDx is a true 32-bit client/server-based application that works with Siemens, Landis + Gyr, Transdata, Schlumberger, Elster, GE, Scientific Columbus and Power Measurement meters, among others. It will also enable the use of telephone, cellular, two-way pager, CDMA/GSM, 1xRTT/GPRS, CDPD, TCP/IP and private networks for meter communications.

Fault Indicator

The Auto Ranger fault indicator allows crews to distinguish between temporary and permanent faults on overhead and single-phase underground lines. When a fault occurs, the Auto Ranger’s red LEDs flash. After one minute, the indicator measures the system current. If it detects load current, the yellow LED flashes and the red LEDs turns off, indicating the fault was temporary. If the fault indicator does not detect a load, the red LEDs continue to flash.

Metering Automation System

Elster Electricity has introduced the EnergyAxis System for residential and small commercial and industrial single-phase metering automation. The system uses a two-way RF communication system with Elster’s electronic single-phase REX meter to read meter billing and instrumentation data; change energy, demand and time-of-use rates; implement critical tier pricing; start or stop load profile interval recording; and initiate service connects and disconnects. EnergyAxis uses A3 ALPHA meters as the host for local data collection from a local-area network of up to 1,024 REX meters.
