Mozambique venture to upgrade 52-MW Mavuzi, 38.4-MW Chicamba

A joint venture of utility Electricidade de Mocambique (EDM) and a Norwegian power firm is to refurbish and operate the 52-MW Mavuzi and 38.4-MW Chicamba hydroelectric projects on Mozambique’s Revue River.

EDM signed a memorandum in February with Statkraft Norfund Power Invest AS (SN Power) to form a 50-50 strategic partnership to develop the vast hydropower potential of Mozambique. Part of the agreement is for SN Power to transfer hydropower knowledge and expertise to EDM and to conduct training activities at the plants in Mozambique and in Norway.

Over 16 years, the venture is to rehabilitate the two hydro projects in Manica State and to operate them. At the end of the period, the plants will be reintegrated into EDM’s electricity system.

The run-of-river Mavuzi plant began operation in 1957. Chicamba, at a multi-purpose reservoir, began operation in 1968. In April, a Mozambique water agency, Fundo de Investimento e Patrimonio do Abastecimento de Agua, invited pre-qualification to design and build a water supply project including civil work at Chicamba Dam.
