Mexico to choose builders of 750-MW La Yesca

Mexico’s Comision Federal de Electricidad (CFE) plans to name winning bidders October 27 for construction of the 750-MW La Yesca hydroelectric project on the Santiago River in Mexico’s Jalisco State.

CFE said October 13 that three consortia submitted bids to construct the project: Ingenieros Civiles Asociados (ICA) of Mexico, Impregilo of Italy, and Sinohydro Corp. of China. The national utility said bids ranged from Impregilo’s US$805 million to Sinohydro’s US$1.25 billion estimate.

CFE requested bids September 28 for civil, electro-mechanical, and associated work. (HNN 8/7/06) To be located at Hostotipaquillo in Jalisco, La Yesca is to include a 210-meter-tall concrete-faced rockfill dam, a basin of 12 million cubic meters, and an underground powerhouse containing two 375-MW turbine-generators.

Construction is expected to create 10,000 jobs and be completed in 2011.

La Yesca is about 20 percent bigger than the 750-MW El Cajon hydroelectric project — which is nearing completion by ICA, 40 miles upstream of La Yesca in Nayarit State.
