Madagascar national utility Jiro Sy Rano Malagasy (Jirama) has awarded a contract for supply of one of two additional turbine-generators to be installed at Madagascar’s 58-MW Andekaleka hydroelectric project.
Jirama’s Bernhard Romahn said supply and installation of turbine Unit 3 was awarded to SinoHydro of China, with funding from the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, Kuwait, and the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa.
Romahn said a contract for new Unit 4, financed by the European Investment Bank (EIB), has not been awarded. He said a decision was expected by the end of November.
EIB signed a 24.5 million euro (US$38.2 million) loan agreement in June to help finance installation of the two additional turbine-generators. (HNN 6/10/08) Energy and Mines Minister Elise Razaka said the units would increase Andekaleka to 126 MW.
The expansion program is intended to permit decommissioning of a number of small, inefficient thermal generators, reducing both generating costs and carbon dioxide emissions.
