Russian manufacturer Power Machines predicts the fourth and final turbine-generator of the 1,000 Tehri Dam hydroelectric project will be commissioned in April on India’s Bhagirathi River.
On behalf of project owner Tehri Hydro Development Corp., Power Machines completed successful testing and commissioning of the third unit in February in Uttarakhand State.
The supplier said it carried out 72-hour continuous tests prior to commissioning of the 250-MW unit, plus valves, gates, and auxiliary equipment. Power Machines is supervising assembly by Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. of India.
Each of the four units supplied by Power Machines has a 4.1-meter-diameter runner rated for 214.3 revolutions per minute.
India Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde officiated at formal inauguration of the first unit in July 2006. The second unit was commissioned in November 2006. (HNN 11/23/06)
The Tehri complex eventually will total 2,400 MW, including 1,000-MW Tehri Dam, 1,000-MW Tehri Pumped-Storage project, and 400-MW Koteshwar project. Tehri Hydro Development Corp. is a joint venture of the Indian government and Uttar Pradesh State.
