The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers seeks information on firms capable of installing an additional spillway weir to improve salmon passage at 810-MW Lower Granite Dam on the Snake River in Washington. Responses are due Dec. 12.
The Corps’ Walla Walla District currently also seeks bids to rehabilitate turbine guide bearings at Lower Granite and the 402-MW Dworshak project in Idaho.
The Corps now seeks information on small businesses capable of installing an additional spillway weir at Lower Granite to improve out-migrating fish passage by raising the crest elevation of the spillway. Responses are to help the agency decide whether to set aside the work for small businesses.
The 180- to 230-ton steel structure is to allow juvenile salmon and steelhead to pass the dam near the water surface under lower acceleration and lower pressure than conventional spillway openings. The weir is to incorporate a mechanical method to adjust the height of the weir crest allowing a variable discharge rate.
The government expects to issue a contract in August or September 2013, with the weir to be operational by mid-March 2014.
