Engineering contract awarded for Nant de Drance project

AF Colenco, a subsidiary of AF Group, has been awarded a contract worth 27 million euros (US$39 million) to provide engineering services for a pumped-storage project in Switzerland.

The contract for the Nant de Drance project near Finhaut, Switzerland, was awarded by a joint venture comprised of Swiss energy provider Alpiq, Forces Motrices Valaisannes, and Swiss federal railway SBB. The contract calls for general project management, detailed engineering and site supervision services.

The 628-MW pumped-storage project is expected to begin commercial production in 2015.

The project is to utilize the height difference of two existing reservoirs, Emosson and Vieux Emosson, in Finhaut between Martigny and Chamonix, to produce peaking power. Access to the completely underground plant is to be by a five-kilometer tunnel, minimizing environmental effects of the big power station.

Earlier this year, Alstom Hydro was awarded a contract to supply the project with four 157-MW vertical Francis reversible turbines, four 170-megavolt-ampere vertical asynchronous motor-generators and other key equipment. (HydroWorld 5/5/09)
