Pumped storage operator Elektrownie Szczytowo-Pompowe S.A. has awarded a contract to Czech equipment supplier CKD Blansko Strojirny to upgrade two turbine runners at Poland’s 800-MW Zarnowiec pumped-storage project.

Under the US$7.5 million contract, Blansko is to supply two new runners for Units 3 and 4 of Zarnowiec, Poland’s largest pumped-storage plant, completed in 1986. The new runners are 6,030 millimeters in diameter, with capacities of 189.4 MW and 196.2 MW.

Zarnowiec, which has the largest Francis turbines in Poland, underwent previous modernization between 1998 and 2001.
