The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers seeks bids from small businesses to modify fish passage to aid Pacific lamprey at the 1,780-MW Dalles and 2,160-MW John Day hydroelectric projects on the Columbia River. Bids are due Aug. 20.
The Corps’ Walla Walla District took bids Aug. 2 for a prototype lamprey entrance structure in a fish ladder at 980-MW McNary Dam on the Columbia. Additionally, the U.S. Forest Service awarded a contract in July to Stillwater Ecosystem Watershed Riverine to perform a lamprey habitat study upstream of Oregon’s 11-MW Soda Springs hydropower project.
In a solicitation set aside for small businesses, the Corps’ Portland District now seeks bids for minor fishway modifications to improve passage conditions for adult Pacific lamprey. The proposed contract calls for mandatory work at the Dalles Dam with a likely option for work at John Day Dam.
The work is expected to entail installation of various sizes of stainless steel plates to the floors of existing fish ladders where a lack of surface attachment structure has been identified as a likely contributor to lamprey passage failure. The work is valued at $250,000 to $500,000.
