International cement supplier Cemex has been selected to provide materials for Austria’s 430-MW Reissek 2 pumped-storage hydroelectric plant, HydroWorld.com has learned.
The US$493.5 million hydro project will be located in the Carinthian Mountains and is being developed by Austrian utility Verbund, alongside Kelag and Energie AG Upper Austria.
Cemex said it will provide 120,000 cubic meters of ready-mix concrete and 24 hour shift operations from a “specially installed mobile plant” that will be located at the worksite.
Amongst the challenges facing Cemex are Reissek 2’s elevation — 5,250 feet above sea level — and harsh temperatures that can dip below zero degrees Fahrenheit.
“We work closely with our customers to provide them with tailor-made building solutions for their most ambitious projects, even if this implies setting up the highest construction site in the Southern Alps in Austria,” said Cemex executive Markus Stumvoll.
HydroWorld.com reported in March that the company has been selected to provide materials for a 32 MW project on the Nile River in Egypt.
