The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has recognized Brazil’s 3,750-MW Jirau hydropower plant under its Clean Development Mechanism.
The project’s majority shareholder, GDF Suez, notes that Jirau is the largest renewable energy plant ever registered as a Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), demonstrating that large hydroelectric can play a role in environmental mitigation.
“The Jirau CDM proejct stands as a key element in Brazil’s efforts to promote sustainable economic growth based on renewable power,” GDF Suez chairman and CEO Gerard Mestrallet said.
Jirau, located on the Madeira River, was also subject of a recently-released sustainability report conducted by the International Hydropower Association.
The plant is being developed by a consortium that includes GDF Suez, Eletrosul and Chesf. Commissioning is expected for later this year.
