Argentina seeks study of four-plant 220-MW Las Canas-Gastona-Medina hydro complex

Argentina’s federal planning ministry seeks bids to study a multi-purpose water complex on the Las Canas, Gastona and Medina rivers that would include four hydroelectric projects totaling 220 MW. Expressions of interest are due January 23 with bids due February 18.

Argentina’s Ministerio de Planification Federal, Inversion Publicas y Servicios previously called for bids by April 23 to construct the 637-MW Chihuido 1 hydroelectric project. In other recent action, the Inter-American Development Bank recruited consultants to help expand the 1,890-MW Salto Grande hydroelectric project on the border of Argentina and Uruguay and Argentina and Brazil promoted plans to develop the 1,150-MW Garabi and 1,150-MW Panambi hydro projects on their common border.

In the current solicitation, Argentina’s federal planning ministry seeks consultants to study a multi-purpose complex that would collect waters of several rivers in the Sali River Basin, notably the Las Canas, Gastona and Medina rivers in Tucuman and Catamarca provinces. The study is to examine existing hydro projects in the basin and then study development of four hydro plants, dubbed Central 1, 2, 3 and 4 with total capacity of 220 MW and annual generation of about 600 gigawatt-hours.

Work would include basic socio-environmental, economic and legal studies; evaluation of previous engineering studies; development of new engineering studies; characterization of the environment at project locations; studies of project alternatives; selected project development engineering; economic and financial evaluation; and preparation of a management model.

The ministry said prospective bidders must obtain documentation from the address below and express their interest within 15 days of the January 8 announcement of the solicitation, by January 23.
