Argentina, Paraguay pre-qualify bidders to build 272-MW Ana Cua

Argentina-Paraguay joint operator Entidad Binacional Yacyreta (EBY) invites applications for pre-qualification to build and equip the 272-MW Ana Cua hydroelectric project, an addition to the 3,200-MW Yacyreta hydroelectric complex on the Parana River. Responses for equipment supply are due December 14 and for civil work December 15.

Yacyreta, one of South America’s largest power projects, was developed jointly by Argentina and Paraguay, with Argentina financing the project in the 1980s at a cost of about US$10 billion. EBY most recently increased Yacyreta’s reservoir level to 83 meters above sea level from 76 meters, increasing generation by 64 percent to 19,545 gigawatt-hours per year.

The Ana Cua hydro project, to have an installed capacity between 210 and 272 MW, is to be built on the existing Ana Cua dam on the Ana Cua branch of the Parana River. EBY is soliciting international bids for equipment and bids from Argentina and Paraguay firms for the civil construction.

The equipment solicitation, No. 486, invites applications for pre-qualification from international companies by noon December 14 for design, manufacture, assembly, testing, and commissioning of electro-mechanical equipment including turbine-generators, governors, excitations systems, transformers, automation systems, controls and protection, and switchyard.

The civil construction solicitation, No. 485, invites applications for pre-qualification from Argentine and Paraguayan companies by noon December 15 for construction of civil and hydraulic works for the power plant and for fish passage. Work is to include assembly of embedded equipment, busbar auxiliary systems, gates and screens, gantry crane, modified spillway gates, intake, draft tube, cofferdams, and environmental impact studies.

Bid documents may be obtained from the address below for the equipment solicitation, No. 486, for US$4,000 and for the civil work solicitation, No. 485, for US$6,000. Documents also may be obtained from the EBY Internet site at http://www.yacyreta.org.ar/index.php?option=com_content&task=category&sectionid=7&id=18&Itemid=33.
