China’s Sinohydro Corporation Ltd. has awarded a contract to Alstom to provide electromechanical equipment and technical services for the 270-MW Soubre hydropower project.
The deal will see Alstom provide three 90 MW Francis turbine units, one 5 MW turbine and related equipment. The contract stipulates Alstom will cover the equipment’s design, manufacturing, supervision of installation, commissioning, testing and other services. The equipment will be manufactured in Alstom’s facility in Tianjin, China.
“Alstom has been playing a major role in Africa’s power development plan, through key recent projects such as Bujagali’s 250 MW hydropower plant in Uganda, or Grand Renaissance’s 3,000 MW project in Ethiopia,” Alstom Renewable Power President Jerome Pecresse said.
Located on Naoua Falls on the Sassandra River, the Soubre hydroelectric plant is part of the Ivory Coast’s plan to increase its power capacity by 150 MW per year through 2021.
HydroWorld.com reported in October 2012 that China’s Export-Import Bank had approved a US$556 million loan for the project.
