SCHAUMBURG, Ill. and ROCHESTER, N.Y., Aug. 5, 2002 — Motorola and Microwave Data Systems (MDS) recently announced that Motorola will begin selling two-way radio products designed and manufactured by MDS, a provider of wireless networking products for Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), telemetry, telecommunications and online transactional markets.
MDS will provide Motorola with several radios from its point-to-multipoint product line including the 9710 MAS radio, which will integrate Motorola’s modem functionality enabling it to support existing Motorola Darcom users.
“Due to a change in strategic direction, Motorola is no longer manufacturing the Darcom MAS radio,” said Hanania David, Motorola director of fixed data products. These radios are traditionally purchased by public electric utilities, water and wastewater system operations and within the oil and gas industries.
According to the agreement, MDS will manufacture data-only radios and Motorola will sell the radios through its direct sales and indirect Motorola Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (MOSCAD) value-added resellers.
Motorola will continue to manufacture other radios for its MOSCAD Remote Terminal Unit portfolio including trunk radio options, UHF and VHF two-way radio systems. MDS spread spectrum, UHF and VHF solutions will be used as well.
“MDS has a long history of providing high-performance radios for mission-critical applications,” said MDS Vice President of Sales and Marketing Rick Nozel. “We are excited about the opportunity to support Motorola in this venture and to be working with an industry heavyweight with global reach.”
