Paper-product manufacturing company, Boardlink has invested £500,000 in biomass energy for its North Wales facility, installing wood-fueled boilers to fuel its 32,500-square meter site based in Hawarden.
Replacing its existing oil boilers, the installation of two Fröling biomass boilers is Boardlink’s first step in a five-year plan to power its operations with sustainable and renewable energy, the company said.
“The foundation of European carton board production is based on continuously growing, well-managed forests as well as paperboard mills powered by bioenergy. This investment is the first step to ensure our production process is as environmentally friendly as our products,” said Ben Still, Managing Director of Boardlink.
He added that the investment was “not only the right thing to do for the business and environment, but it will also improve working conditions for our employees during the winter months”
A bespoke energy plant room has been incorporated into the heart of the factory to house the boilers, which were installed and commissioned in September. Fueled by wood chips, the Fröling biomass boilers are 40 percent more efficient than Boardlink’s previous oil boilers, using a supply of CO2 neutral, naturally renewable raw materials.
Boardlink is privately owned and has 100 employees. The company specializes in carton board sales, conversion and lamination, as well as the manufacturing of carton board ready meal trays, paper plates and a wide range of catering and janitorial wipes and wiper cloths.
