South Korean developer Ekornergy has signed an agreement with Dutch manufacturer Tocardo Tidal Turbines for the installation of a 28 MW marine power project.
The project is to be located off the coast of Korea’s Mokpo Jeonnam region and will initially include 15 of Tocardo’s T2 turbines. Manufacturing of the T2 units is expected to begin in late 2015 and will give the installation an output capacity of 3 MW.
The company said it will begin producing larger T3 units in 2016, which will be installed to give the tidal array an additional 25 MW of capacity.
“This is a major step towards accelerating Tocardo’s expansion into large-scale tidal energy projects across the globe,” company CEO Hans van Berugel said. “We’re looking forward to working to Ekornergy and other Korean partners to seize this opportunity to supply the Korean grid with significant amounts of clean and reliable energy, helping reduce the country’s carbon emissions.”
HydroWorld.com reported this past July that the Amsterdam-based hydrokinetic turbine manufacturer had entered into a strategic business partnership with international law firm Clifford Chance.
The company also agreed to a power distribution deal with Climex, which followed a deal with Repsol intended to further development of its offshore capabilities last year.
