Portugal utility names Andritz to equip 170-MW Baixo Sabor

Utility Energias de Portugal (EDP) has named a consortium of Andritz Hydro and Ensulmeci to supply generating equipment for the 170-MW Baixo Sabor pumped-storage project on the Sabor River in northern Portugal.

The 111 million euro (US$139.6 million) contract, announced March 5, calls for supply and installation of complete electro-mechanical equipment for two pumped-storage plants at Baixo Sabor. (HNN 7/18/08) Andritz said its portion of the contract totals 90 million euros (US$113.2 million).

Equipment for each of the two plants includes two reversible turbine-generators, hydraulic steel structures, transformers, command and control equipment, and auxiliary equipment. Andritz said model tests for each plant will be performed at Andritz laboratories in Linz, Austria, and Vevey, Switzerland.

EDP awarded a 257 million euro (US$407.8 million) contract in 2008 to a consortium of Bento Pedroso Construcoes SA and LENA Engenharia e Construcoes SA to build Baixo Sabor. (HNN 7/3/08)

Baixo Sabor is to include a 123-meter-tall double arch dam, a 45-meter-tall gravity dam, and a powerhouse containing two turbine-generators. It is expected to go on line in late 2012 or early 2013.

Andritz noted that a year ago EDP awarded the company, then called VA Tech Hydro, a 53 million euro (US$83.1 million) contract to equip the 191-MW Bemposta 2 hydroelectric project on Portugal’s Douro River. (HNN 3/19/08)
