Canada’s Ontario Power Generation and the Mattagami First Nation have signed a memorandum setting out the framework of a partnership for hydroelectric development at the utility’s Mattagami Lake control dam.
The utility and the Indian group said March 22 they hope to have a final agreement later this spring for the joint development of 3 to 6 MW in the immediate vicinity of the dam.
The dam is located about 50 kilometers south of Timmins in the Mattagamis’ traditional territory.
Chief Willis McKay said the First Nation is committed to achieving an agreement that recognizes and advances the interests of both parties. He said project development could create jobs and provide training, business, revenue, and educational opportunities for the Mattagami community.
“There is a need for clean, renewable electricity supply and the development of the Mattagami Lake control dam provides an opportunity for both the Mattagami First Nation and OPG to work together in meeting that need,” McKay added.
