The 10-nation Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) has named a multi-national consortium to help implement a regional power trade project, including hydropower, to advance cooperative development of basin resources.
NBI awarded a US$496,375 contract to Mercados Energeticos of Spain in association with Nord Pool Consulting of Norway and CEEST of Tanzania. The group was chosen from among five bidders.
Representing the nations of Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda, the NBI’s Shared Vision Program received a World Bank grant to carry out the power trade project. (HNN 3/16/06)
Mercados Energeticos and its associates are to review institutional arrangements of regional power trade organizations around the world and prepare reports comparing them. It also is to draft a report to power trade project officials detailing broad contours of an institutional and legal arrangement suitable for the Nile Basin Power Forum, and a strategic roadmap to establish such a forum.
Other work includes developing a model for regulatory and institutional frameworks needed to establish and support regional power trade at the Nile sub-basin and basin level, and a strategic roadmap to establish such a power market.
The work is to require eight months.
