Kazakhstan reopens call for Yntumak Dam rehab, new hydro plant

Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Agriculture has reopened its invitation for pre-qualification to rehabilitate Yntumak Dam and reservoir and build a new hydro plant. Responses are due August 16.

With funding from the World Bank, the ministry’s Committee for Water Resources seeks contractors under the Nura River Clean-up Project. (HNN 5/14/07) The project is to allow the dam to provide flow control for the Nura River and to manage mercury contaminated sediments in the reservoir. Another solicitation in pending: Expressions of interest for construction supervision of Yntumak Reservoir (also spelled Intumak) are due August 15. (HNN 7/11/07)

Work under the reopened solicitation includes completion of the partially built Yntumak Reservoir, including rehabilitation of a 1.6-kilometer-long, 22.5-meter-tall earthfill main dam; construction of a spillway with rubber dam for a design flood of 3,000 cms; refurbishment and adaptation of a bottom outlet; construction of a 700-kW hydroelectric plant; and rehabilitation of the Aktobe village protection dam. The hydro plant also is to be connected to Kazakhstan’s transmission grid.

The ministry reopened pre-qualification because cost estimates were revised requiring a revision of pre-qualification criteria. Mainly, the new invitation calls for companies to have minimum average annual construction turnover in the last five years of US$20 million, rather than the previous US$15 million, and they must have cash flow of US$3 million, rather than the previous US$2 million.

Pre-qualification documents in English may be obtained from the address below. Applicants who obtained pre-qualification documents in response to the first invitation will be contacted by the ministry and will receive revised documents.

Applications for pre-qualification are due by August 16, labeled Application to Pre-qualification within the Nura River Clean-up’ Project, Contract NRC-B3, Yntumak Reservoir Rehabilitation and Technical Re-equipment. (Re-invitation)
