Environmental documents submitted for Peru’s 180-MW Belo Horizonte

Peru’s Ministerio de Energia y Minas (MEM) has received an environmental impact statement on the 180-MW Belo Horizonte hydroelectric project in Huanuco Department from project concession-holder Compania Energetica del Centro.

MEM awarded a temporary concession to Energetica in February to perform a feasibility study of Belo Horizonte. (HNN 2/12/09) Energetica has 24 months to perform studies of Belo Horizonte in the districts of Monzon, Rupa-Rupa, and Jose Crespo y Castillo in the provinces of Leoncio Prado and Huamalies.

Business News Americas reported the environmental documents estimated the project would cost a total of US$289 million to build over five years.

Belo Horizonte is to feature a 20-meter-tall dam, a reservoir, and a 19-kilometer, 220-kilovolt transmission line to connect the project to the Tingo Maria substation.
