ANDRITZ to supply equipment for 110-MW Robert S. Kerr hydropower

ANDRITZ has received a contract from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Tulsa District, to rehabilitate and upgrade all four turbines and generators at the 110-MW Robert S. Kerr hydroelectric plant, located on the Arkansas River in eastern Oklahoma.

The order value is close to €75 million (US$87.3 million). Commissioning of the first unit is expected in August 2025. Once commissioned, the expected power generation will be about 152 GWh per year.

The ANDRITZ scope of supply includes the design, manufacturing, supply, transportation, erection, testing and commissioning of four Kaplan turbine-generator units with a capacity of 36.8 MW each, along with associated auxiliaries and ancillary equipment.

Robert S. Kerr Lock and Dam was completed in 1971. The rolled earthfill dam is 75 feet maximum height above the streambed, and the total length of the structure is 7,230 feet, including the spillway, powerhouse intake and navigation lock.

The powerhouse contains four 27.5-MW Kaplan units. The Corps website says the turbine and generator rehabilitation at the project began in 2020.

USACE’s Tulsa District operates and maintains eight hydroelectric power plants, containing a total of 22 turbine-generator units with a generating capacity of 584 MW. They are: Keystone Lake, Fort Gibson Lake, Eufaula Lake, Tenkiller Lake, Webber Falls Lock and Dam, Robert S. Kerr Lock and Dam, Lake Texoma and Broken Bow Lake.
