The French Agency for Development has guaranteed a loan worth up to about US$46.3 million to help Pakistan rehabilitate its 243-MW Warsak hydropower plant.
The project is being refurbished by the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA), which has previously received funding for the $180 project from Germany’s kFw Development Bank, the European Investment Bank (EIB) and Pakistani government.
$1.7 million of the funding has also been earmarked to develop a new hydro training facility.
Located on the Kabul River in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Warsak includes four 40-MW generating units, a dam, irrigation tunnels and transmission system. Two 41.48-MW units were added in 1980-1981.
HydroWorld.com reported WAPDA had sought consultants to form sediment management strategies in August after having previously accepting bids in April for a tendering agent for the rehabilitation. It also called for bids in March to rehabilitate a turbine runner and wicket gates at Warsak. It took bids last year to supply butterfly and gate valves for the project.
