Several of the winners of the 2019 Clean Energy BC awards are hydroelectric projects. CEBC says: “Each of this year’s winners has made a meaningful impact to those around them through their hard work and dedication to advancing clean energy.”
In the Operational Excellence category, the winner was: Forrest Kerr Hydro facility, owned by Axium Infrastructure Inc., Manulife Financial Corporation, Tahltan First Nation, and AltaGas Canada Inc. The 195-MW Forrest Kerr hydropower project in British Columbia, Canada, is a run-of-river powerhouse on the Iskut River that was commissioned in July 2014.
The Distinguished Service Award was given to Matt Kennedy, vice president-environment with Innergex Renewable Energy Inc. he oversees Innergex’s environmental obligations and risks for the corporation’s renewable electricity projects in all phases, including development, construction and operations. Innergex conducts operations in Canada, the U.S., France, Iceland and Chile. The company manages a portfolio of assets that consists of interests in 68 operating facilities with an aggregate installed capacity of 1,725 MW (gross 3,072 MW), including 37 hydroelectric facilities.
In the Environmental Stewardship category, the winner was ‘Namgis First Nation and Evolugen by Brookfield Renewable for the Kokish Hydroelectric Facility. Kokish is located on northeastern Vancouver Island is a run-of-river facility owned and operated by Kwagis Power (a partnership between Brookfield Renewable Energy Partners/now Evolugen by Brookfield Renewable and the ‘Namgis First Nation). It was commissioned in 2014 and has an installed capacity of 45 MW.
The Finance award was given to Tahltan Nation Purchase of Interest in the Northwest Hydro Electric Facilities. In what it is calling “the largest clean energy investment by a First Nation in BC History,” The Tahltan Nation in northwest British Columbia has purchased 5% of three hydroelectric facilities in the province. The three run-of-river projects are 195-MW Forrest Kerr, 66-MW McLymont Creek and 16-MW Volcano Creek. All three are located in Tahltan Territory.
Clean Energy BC is an association in British Columbia with a goal “to develop a viable power generation and power management industry in British Columbia that serves the public interest by providing cost-effective electricity through the efficient and environmentally responsible development of the province’s generation and transmission resources and facilities.”
