A consortium of ABB of Switzerland and Harbin Electric Machinery Co. Ltd. of China is supplying electro-mechanical equipment for rehabilitation and expansion of the 107-MW Machu Picchu hydroelectric project in Peru’s Cusco Region to 206 MW.
Under subcontract to engineering-procurement-construction contractor Grana y Montero of Peru, ABB is supplying electrical and automation solutions, while Harbin supplies turbine equipment to design and install a 99-MW Francis turbine-generator in a second powerhouse.
Utility Empresa de Generacion Electrica Machupicchu S.A. (Egemsa) awarded a contract in April to Grana y Montero, which bid US$148 million to perform the work. (HydroWorld 4/9/09) Rehabilitation of Machu Picchu was required due to flood damage in February 1998. Egemsa initiated rehabilitation work with its own personnel and financial resources.
Grana y Montero has 30 months to construct the second phase of the power plant, which includes three months of pilot operation. When complete in 2011, the expansion also is to help regulate the Vilcanota River, minimizing the risk of landslides and flooding.
ABB said July 6, 2009, that its US$25 million share of the work is an integrated instrumentation control and electrical solution, including protection and control equipment, instrumentation, medium- and high-voltage switchgear, generator circuit breakers, excitation systems, transformers, cables, and a power plant control system for the governor and balance of plant.
