Workshop Boosts Small Hydro Power in Europe

August 15, 2003 [] The European Small Hydro Power Association (ESHA) is hosting their first workshop on small hydropower (SHP) in Bolzano, Italy on September 18. “The Thematic Network on SHP” (TNSHP) will focus on the current obstacles faced and challenges taken regarding SHP in Europe. Funded by the European Commission and coordinated by ESHA the workshop is designed to promote information exchange between stakeholders in order to address technological issues and develop ways on how to overcome barriers for further SHP exploitation. The first TNSHP Workshop will provide an opportunity to present and publicize worldwide the major findings and results of the different working groups, as well as to allow peer groups to share their experiences. ESHA, a non-profit organization based in Brussels, Belgium, maintains that despite the very favorable characteristics of small hydropower (including the production of renewable, decentralized and indigenous energy) the technology is often not exploited because of economic or environmental concerns. Through their workshops, ESHA hopes to create a platform for information exchange to cope with these challenges and aims at providing solutions and answers, which will ensure the further uptake and exploitation of SHP within the European Union and beyond.
