Who is the Greenest of them all?

Austin Energy sold more kWh of green power last year than any other electric utility in the country, far surpassing the second ranked utility by more than 140 percent in both sales and total MWs, according to recently released figures by the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory.

Austin, Texas – March 31, 2003 [SolarAccess.com] Austin Energy sold 251,520,000 kWh of green power totaling 28.7 MW to Austin Energy subscribers through its GreenChoice program that generates electricity from clean, renewable sources from the wind, sunshine, methane gas from landfills and hydroelectricity. The total Renewable Energy sold last year is enough electricity to power almost 21,000 average-sized homes year-round. Austin Energy far surpasses other utilities in selling green power subscriptions and creating new sources of Renewable Energy for sale to customers. The second and third ranked utilities, Sacramento Municipal Utility District and Xcel Energy, sold 104,344,000 kWh and 103,739,000 kWh respectively. The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power with a customer base of 3.8 million ranked fourth with 66,666,000 kWh, significantly less than Austin Energy with a customer base of 350,000. Austin Energy has sold more than 375,000,000 kWh of green power to customers since the GreenChoice program’s inception in 2000 and has about 100 MW of Renewable Energy in its portfolio. It also is ranked fourth in the country for offering one of the lowest premiums for green power and was one of the first to lock in rates as a hedge against rising fuel prices. Currently, more than 6,500 residents, 165 small businesses, and 31 of Austin’s largest companies and organizations subscribe to GreenChoice.
