Wave prototype to be tested in United Kingdom

Renewable Energy Holdings PLC plans to begin testing a prototype of its Cylindrical Energy Transfer Oscillating (CETO) wave power generator in the United Kingdom in 2007.

The CETO unit sits on the seabed, where it uses wave energy

to pump water to a 100-kw Pelton turbine on shore. Each unit is expected to supply enough power for about 100 homes. The unit is held in place on the seabed by pumping sand into ballast tanks. Scour mats prevent erosion around the unit.

In May 2005, the initial CETO test unit was deployed near Rous Head, Fremantle, Perth, in western Australia.

Sensors placed on the CETO unit itself measure wave height, wave period, and energy spectrums. A supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system collects the data, which can be remotely monitored from Renewable Energy Holdings’ laboratories in the United Kingdom.

Ocean energy conference to be held in Hawaii

The Ocean Energy Council is organizing the 4th Annual EnergyOcean Conference and Exhibition, to be held August 21-23, 2007, in Oahu, Hawaii, United States.

The conference will feature about 20 speakers discussing policy and regulation, as well as the construction and installation of ocean energy projects. Hydro technologies to be discussed include wave, tidal, and current. Other technologies include offshore wind, thermal, and solar.

Attendees will include government officials, as well as representatives of energy companies, utilities, and technology firms from around the world.

Wave energy plant being built in Portugal

AquaEnergy Group Ltd., a United States-based subsidiary of Finavera Renewables Ltd. in Ireland, is constructing the 2-mw Figuera da Foz wave energy plant in Portugal. The plant is using AquaEnergy’s AquaBuOY technology.

Figuera da Foz is being installed in 60 meters of water about 10 kilometers off the coast, midway between Lisbon and Porto. Once successful operation of the plant has been demonstrated, AquaEnergy will expand its capacity to 100 mw.

In August 2006, AquaEnergy received a letter of successful evaluation from the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Energy and Transport under the European Union’s Framework Protocol 6 program. This means the commission might contribute up to 1.37 million euros (US$1.75 million) toward development of the plant.

Partners in the project include Dunlop Oil & Marine Ltd. in the United Kingdom, Portuguese engineering group Kynamar, and Labelec, a division of utility Energias de Portugal.

The project is expected to be completed by 2010.

Marine projects in Scotland awarded US$25.5 million

The government of Scotland has awarded more than 13 million pounds (US$25.5 million) in financial assistance to developers of marine projects, most to be deployed in Scotland’s Orkney Islands.

The devices are expected to be deployed in 2007, most in and around the new European Marine Energy Center (EMEC) in Orkney.

Winning developers are:

  • Aquamarine, for Oyster devices to utilize near-shore waves;
  • AWS Ocean Energy, for a 500-kw Archimedes Wave Swing wave energy converter at EMEC;
  • CleanTechCom, for two 1-meter-diameter siphon pipes in northern Lamb Holm Island;
  • CRE Energy Ltd., for four of Ocean Power Delivery’s 750-kw Pelamis wave power generators;
  • Ocean Power Technologies, for a 150-kw PowerBuoy;
  • Open Hydro, for a 250-kw Open-Centre turbine at EMEC;
  • ScotRenewables, for SRTT, a floating tidal stream energy converter;
  • Tidal Generation, for extraction of a core sample of seabed from the area its machine will occupy; and
  • Wavegen, for a Wells turbine system on the Western Isles at Siadar.
