Visitors’ Center Boasts Geothermal, Solar

Little Buffalo State Park in Newport Pennsylvania has a new visitors’ center that highlights renewable energy technology, along with other educational items. Energy-efficient, green technology construction features of the 5,450-square-foot building include a geothermal heat pump, solar lighting, energy efficient lighting, a recycled metal roof, and fiber cement siding. Construction for the $1.1 million project was partially paid with Growing Greener funds, as well as Keystone Recreation Park and Conservation money. Little Buffalo State Park is located near Newport in Centre Township, and offers picnic areas, hiking trails and a lake for fishing and boating. Historical features include a covered bridge; a restored, operating grist mill; an old farm house built on the site of a colonial tavern; and a narrow-gauge railroad trace which features one of the original rail cars.
