‘Supergrids’ and the Future of Wind

Dr. Eddie O’Connor likes to think big. As CEO of Airtricity — the fastest growing private wind development company in the world — he has plans to create a “supergrid” across the North Sea, which will transmit 10,000MW of electricity to countries throughout Europe from Airtricity’s offshore wind farms. And that’s just the beginning.

On this week’s show, Dr. O’Connor talks about the future of offshore wind in Europe and the huge market potential for Airtricity in the U.S. He’ll also explain how the company bypasses utilities and sells electricity from its wind farms straight to the consumer. Also in the podcast: A joint development agreement between thin film manufacturer Heliovolt and inverter manufacturer Exeltech could help create more cost-competitive solar systems that are “grid interactive” straight from the factory. This could give another boost to the rapidly growing thin film industry. Inside Renewable Energy offers the latest in renewable energy news and information.
