Study to Look at Building New Birdsville Power Plant Down Under

Australia [ABC North West Queensland] The Queensland Energy Minister has announced a feasibility study to expand Australia’s only geothermal power station at Birdsville. John Mickel toured the facility in the far southwest of the state. A quarter of Birdsville’s electricity is generated by using hot water from the Great Artesian Basin. But Mr Mickel says the study will look at building a new plant capable of generating about four times more power. “If the feasibility study proves up this will be an exciting breakthrough for communities that are well away from the major centres of population … I think where the Birdsville Races are on the social calendar… I think we’ll find that tourists will come to look at the geothermal technology,” he said.
