Senegal Hooks Into Giant Hydro Dam

July 24, 2002 [] Senegal has connected its power grid to the massive Manantali hydroelectric dam in neighboring Mali, the national electricity utility said on Tuesday. The dam is jointly owned by Mali, Senegal and Mauritania. The Senelac utility said the power had been switched on last Friday in a test phase, and that output would gradually be increased to Senegal’s 60 MW quota. The addition of turbines next year at Manantali should allow production levels to grow to 200 MW.
