RWE Schott Solar Installs Pentagon PV Array

Rocklin, California – April 24, 2003 [SolarAccess.com] RWE Schott Solar has designed one of the country’s largest federally-owned solar power systems at the United States Pentagon as part of the Department of Defense’s (DOD) Pentagon Reservation Solar and Hydro Energy Farm program. The DOD formed the Pentagon Reservation Solar and Hydro Energy Farm to uncover new ways of generating power with clean, Renewable Energy resources. According to Pentagon Energy Manager Bob Billak, “The DOD continues to step out decisively as a leader using Renewable Energy resources at DOD facilities. The system provided by RWE SCHOTT Solar is the largest deployment of all of the alternative energy systems. It is an excellent system that has allowed us to effectively produce clean power to help the environment.” The PV system developed by RWE SCHOTT Solar has been deployed in three phases at the Pentagon. Two of the PV systems are located behind the Pentagon Physical Plant, and the third system is located at the Pentagon Heating and Refrigeration plant. The largest and the latest phase of the installation can be found at the Pentagon’s Heating and Refrigeration plant. It features a 70 kW PV system with made up of 315 W, high-power versions of RWE SCHOTT Solar’s ASE 300 modules, the largest solar modules commercially available worldwide. A total of 276 modules have been installed in 23 rows of 12 modules per row. Tilt-angles were chosen to minimize row-to-row separation, allowing the achievement of greater power density. RWE SCHOTT Solar designed the system to also utilize multiple distributed small inverters each a “Sunny Boy” 1800 model from SMA America, Inc. – for protection against loss of power due to a single inverter fault. “The Pentagon’s embracing of Renewable Energy resources demonstrates the country’s commitment to exploring alternative, clean energy resources to protect the environment and preserve our natural resources,” said Tom Starrs, executive vice president of RWE SCHOTT Solar. “We are honored to be playing a role in helping our government produce energy cleanly and efficiently. The Earth Day celebration is the ideal time to acknowledge the strides we’ve made and will continue to make in utilizing our country’s abundant renewable energy resources.”
