Renewable energy industry cries betrayal

Back in 1965, Australia was steeped in green credentials, sourcing about 23 per cent of its electricity generation from emission-free renewable energy, courtesy of the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme. Of course, back then nobody cared about global warming. But by 1997 the contribution of renewable energy to the Australian electricity mix had fallen below 11 per cent as soaring power demand was met with cheap coal.
