Pulp Steam Reformer to Convert Biomass to Hydrogen

A large boiler has been delivered to Norampac Inc as part of a Cdn$30 million Pulse Enhanced Steam Reform waste management system for the disposal of black liquor pulp waste and its conversion into clean burning hydrogen.

TRENTON, Ontario, CA, 2001-12-07 [SolarAccess.com] The 80 tonne, 40 foot boiler is the key component of what officials describe as the world’s first commercial steam reformer, being built at Norampac’s mill in Trenton. Approved by provincial and federal authorities, when completed in 2003 the steam reformer technology will convert pulping liquor into hydrogen-rich fuel gas, steam and soda ash that will all be reused in the papermaking process. “This steam reformer will be a model of efficiency and environmental responsibility for other paper mills to follow,” says general manager Gary Hodgins. “Norampac is to be commended for being the first company to implement this environmentally friendly technology,” adds federal agriculture minister Lyle Vanclief. “I am proud to say that when this is in operation, we will have North America’s cleanest paper mill in our region.” Critics says there has been no opportunity for public hearings or an environmental assessment and, while emissions may be relatively insignificant if it is used solely for pulp waste management, Norampac literature suggests the facility may accept general and hazardous waste for treatment, at which point dioxins and other pollutants could have implications for public health in the region. Norampac is a joint venture between Cascades and Domtar, and is the ninth largest manufacturer of linerboard and corrugated packaging products in North America. Its Trenton mill produces 500 short tons a day of corrugating medium pacakaging at the only closed loop paper mill in Canada.
