Norwegians Explore Biodiesel Options

Oslo, Norway [South Africa/Independent Online] Norwegian oil company Norsk Hydro ASA and paper maker Norske Skog ASA said Friday they are exploring ways to produce biodiesel from wood. … The two companies said wood-based biodiesel would lead to lower emissions of greenhouse gases, and launched a study to determine the feasibility of building a biodiesel plant in southeast Norway by 2012. … However, they added that wood-based biodiesel production requires the development of new technology as well as a political will to promote biodiesel as an alternative to regular fuels. “There is great potential for biodiesel in the market of the future, but if this market is going to materialise we are in need of a sound, long-term operating framework from the authorities,” the companies said in a statement.
