New Device to Harness Geothermal Energy

October 25, 2002 [] The new Thermator, from Iceland-based Varmaraf is a device that converts heat flow into electrical power. According to the company, when heat flows through the semi-conducting materials, electrical voltage arises that may be used to drive an electrical load. The advantage of using this effect is that the generator contains no moving parts, just the semi-conducting material and channels for routing the heat through it. The company says it is particularly well-suited to generate electricity from geothermal sources.
