Modernization complete for 48-MW Belorechenskaya hydropower in Russia


LUKOIL announces it has completed the modernization of the 48-MW Belorechenskaya (Belorechensk) hydropower station. The reconstruction, which started in 2017 and included replacement of two generating units, boosted the installed capacity of each unit from 16 MW to 24 MW.

The upgrade was launched in 2015 and also extended the plant’s operational life for 40 years, increased reliability and improved environmental safety. Advanced technologies – brushless excitation for the hydro generator and electric drive for the turbine wicket gate – allow a more efficient use of the site’s potential. The company also introduced integrated upgrade solutions for almost all auxiliary systems at the station.

The station’s annual net electricity supply increased by almost 80% after the reconstruction and will reach 260 million kWh, preventing emissions of about 130,000 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent a year.

The history of the Belorechenskaya hydropower plant in the Krasnodar Region dates to 1954. The station uses the elevation difference between the Belaya and Pshish rivers.

LUKOIL is an oil and gas exploration and production company, with operations in 12 countries, mostly concentrated in Russia, central Asia and the Middle East.

LUKOIL’s renewable energy facilities include four hydropower stations in Russia with overall capacity of 291 MW; three solar power plants at the company’s refineries in Russia, Romania and Bulgaria (20 MW in total); and one 84-MW wind farm in Romania.

A search of the company’s website indicates its other hydro plants are called Krasnaya Polyana, Maikop and Tsimlyansk. All four plants became part of the LUKOIL Group in 2008 (part of LLC LUKOIL-Ekoenergo).
